Beyond earnings: Pine Labs rewrites POS playbook, bets on Blinkit and Zepto for gift cards

While investors focused on Pine Labs' quarterly earnings and guidance, the company's first post-listing earnings call offered a deeper look at the strategy shaping its next phase of growth. Beyond the headline numbers, the fintech company disclosed a new economics for its POS business, revealed that its credit-processing business has quietly grown into a nearly Rs 100 crore annual revenue stream, and outlined plans to expand gift card distribution through Blinkit and Zepto. Management also shared updates on its AI initiatives, new issuing products and international expansion, providing fresh insight into how Pine Labs is evolving beyond its core payments business. Perhaps the biggest structural change outlined during the earnings call relates to Pine Labs' terminal business. For years, the company purchased POS devices and leased them to merchants, earning recurring rental income. That model is now changing. Pine Labs said nearly 25-30% of new terminal deployments now require merchants to purchase the hardware upfront instead of the company carrying it on its own balance sheet. While this lowers reported contribution margins because hardware sales are inherently low-margin, management said the strategy reduces depreciation, improves cash efficiency and creates a lighter balance sheet. The company expects to deploy 125,000-130,000 terminals during the year, with most network investments already completed. Another notable disclosure was around Pine Labs' issuing platform. Management revealed that its credit issuing and acquiring processing business has grown into an annual revenue business of nearly Rs 100 crore, a figure it has not previously highlighted publicly. The company said its issuing platform today spans nearly 20 countries, extending well beyond gift cards into prepaid cards, forex cards and open-loop payment products. To further expand the business, Pine Labs plans to launch meal cards, fuel cards and expense cards by October, while also building direct-to-consumer prepaid products. Pine Labs also revealed that it has started distributing gift cards through Blinkit and Zepto, signalling that quick commerce is becoming an important sales channel for digital gifting. The company is simultaneously expanding into gaming by distributing Roblox gift cards and targeting in-app purchases, which management sees as another growth avenue. Interestingly, despite multiple analyst questions on gift cards, issuing and distribution, management made no reference to breakage income, unredeemed gift cards or breakage accounting, instead focusing on processing, distribution and new products. Alongside these strategic shifts, Pine Labs continued to outline its investments in AI and overseas markets. The company said nearly 90% of new code across several business divisions is now written using AI-assisted tools, while it recently demonstrated what it called India's first agentic payment, where AI agents completed a payment transaction using UPI mandates.
